Marion County and Madison County, Indiana
Roll-off dumpsters in Indianapolis and Anderson, with the local rules written down
Give us a ZIP code, a size and a week. Up to three roll-off companies that work there get your request and call you with a price. Below the form is the part haulers tend to skip: which office issues the street permit, what it costs, and what the landfill charges.
Two counties, two sets of rules
Indianapolis (Marion County)
- Box in the street, curb lane or on the sidewalk: you need a Right-of-Way Use permit from the Department of Business and Neighborhood Services (DBNS).
- Apply online in the city's Accela portal. A licensed contractor is not required for this permit.
- Application fee: $40 (schedule in effect since Jan 5, 2026). The city's checklist says to allow 7 to 10 business days.
Anderson (Madison County)
- Box in a street, alley or sidewalk area: you need a Dumpster Permit through the City Engineer's Office.
- The city's permit form lists a $10 fee and says the permit is good for 10 days from the date you apply.
- Pendleton, Alexandria, Elwood, Lapel and Ingalls have their own offices. See the Anderson and Madison County page.
A box that sits entirely on your own driveway is outside these street permits. Your HOA or landlord may still have a say.
Three questions to settle before you book
- Where will the box sit? Driveway, street, or an alley behind the house. In Indianapolis, the street option means a permit request about two weeks ahead. In Anderson, the permit runs only 10 days, so time the application to the delivery.
- What goes in it? Indiana law keeps whole tires out of landfills and electronics out of the trash. At South Side Landfill, a load that mixes concrete with household junk is charged at the household rate, so keep clean fill separate. Size guide.
- Would city pickup be enough? Indianapolis takes two bulky items a month on your heavy trash day, but no construction debris. Anderson's Heavy Pick-Up through Best Way Disposal does not cover remodeling debris either. Compare the options.

Short answers
- Do you rent the dumpsters?
- No. We pass your request to roll-off companies that serve your ZIP code. They quote, deliver and bill you directly.
- Is there a charge for the request?
- No. You pay only the company you choose to hire.
- Which ZIP codes do you take?
- Marion County, including Indianapolis, and Madison County, including Anderson, Pendleton, Alexandria, Elwood, Lapel and Ingalls. Nearby suburbs are fine too; if no company covers your ZIP, nobody calls and nothing is sold.
- Who gets the street permit, me or the hauler?
- Either can apply. Anderson's form asks for the name of the dumpster leasing company, so have that ready. Ask each hauler whether they file it for you and whether the fee is in their price.
